Каравайка широко распространена в Евразии, Африке, Австралии, Северной Америке. В России встречается на юге — в дельтах рек Кубань, Дон, Терек, Волга. Зимуют каравайки в Африке и южной Азии, изредка некоторые особи остаются на зимовку в дельте Кубани
